  1. The tortie kitten pictured in your article is from CowboyClaws Cattery in Texas. Th kitten’s mother is a Siamese imported from Hungary and the kitten’s father is a Peterbald imported about 9 years ago from Russia. Many of the American breeders are working with imported lines in order to produce more authentic kittens that more closely resemble the intentions of the Russian originators of the breed.

The American interpretation of an Oriental Shorthair is a smaller, more refined, thinner, smaller boned cat with a higher ear-set and larger eyes than the most often seen Oriental Shorthair interpretation of the breed in Europe and more specifically in Russia. Because the breed is so new, we are constantly outcrossing to develop the look of the cat.

The commonly held belief is that the Peterbald should look like a “hairless oriental”. However, in actuality, the Peterbald should look like a “hairless European Oriental”.

Although the breed standard for the Oriental in Europe and the USA are pretty much the same, the interpretation varies significantly in most cases. Therefore most of the serious American breeders are working with imported lines for outcrossing to develop their lines.
